Immediate Oversight Needed at North Lake ICE Detention Center

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. James

From: A constituent in Mount Clemens, MI

September 19

I am a constituent writing to express serious concern about the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan, which reopened in June 2025. As of today, no members of Congress appear to have conducted formal oversight of this facility. Reports from Interlochen Public Radio and local advocacy organizations indicate that detainees may lack adequate access to legal counsel, medical care, and grievance mechanisms. ICE’s own published data on detainee populations is limited and does not provide a clear picture of conditions on the ground. I urge you to: 1. Conduct or request an official oversight visit to North Lake. 2. Ensure transparency by sharing findings with your constituents. 3. Collaborate with oversight committees to verify compliance with ICE detention standards. Congressional oversight is essential to prevent human rights abuses and ensure accountability in ICE facilities. I respectfully request a response outlining steps you will take to monitor North Lake and protect the rights of detainees. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
