Demand Action on ICE Abuses and DHS Funding Before Friday Deadline

February 9

DHS funding expires this Friday, creating an urgent opportunity to rein in ICE enforcement practices that are devastating communities and violating due process. I urge you to use this funding deadline to demand accountability and restore constitutional protections for immigrants. The current enforcement regime has produced unconscionable outcomes. Seamus Culleton, an Irish immigrant with a green card application in process, a valid work permit, and marriage to a U.S. citizen, has been detained for five months without charges despite living in the United States for 20 years with no criminal record. A judge approved his release, yet ICE continues holding him while he disputes their claim that he signed deportation forms. This is not law enforcement. This is arbitrary detention. On October 19, federal agents conducted a raid at La Catedral Arena in Wilder, Idaho, deploying weapons and a helicopter to round up 75 people who have since been deported. The New York Times reported this raid nearly destroyed the community. Even in deep-red Idaho, residents who relied on Hispanic labor never imagined such operations would devastate their town. Planting season approaches with profound uncertainty about who will work the fields that feed this country. These enforcement actions ignore judicial oversight, separate families, and destabilize entire communities including those that voted for stricter immigration policies. This is not what constituents of any political persuasion want when they call for border security. Before Friday's funding deadline, I ask you to demand three specific changes: restore due process protections for immigrants with pending applications, require judicial approval before extended detention, and end workplace raids that terrorize entire communities. Use your appropriations power to establish clear accountability measures for ICE operations. The momentum for reform is building. Bad Bunny stood before millions during the Super Bowl halftime show beneath the words "The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate Is Love" and declared "God Bless America" while celebrating all the countries of the Americas. That vision of America, not the current enforcement chaos, deserves your support.
