Support Climate Bills NOW

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Thanedar

From: A constituent in Detroit, MI

August 13

I am writing to urge you to support the most ambitious climate legislation available, not incremental adjustments, but the bold, systemic action this moment demands. This summer has made the stakes impossible to ignore. Communities worldwide have endured record breaking heat, out of control wildfires, and extreme weather events that have taken lives and destroyed homes. This is not a distant threat, it is happening now, and it will only intensify without decisive intervention. I am asking you to champion policies that meet the scale of this crisis, including: • Rapid, large scale investment in renewable energy infrastructure to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels • Binding emissions reduction targets with real enforcement mechanisms, not voluntary goals • An end to fossil fuel subsidies, redirected toward clean energy and climate resilience • Urban greening and tree canopy programs to reduce the heat island effect in dense neighborhoods • Funding for reflective and permeable pavement, cool roof incentives, and green infrastructure in urban planning • Investment in wetland restoration, green stormwater infrastructure, and updated floodplain management to mitigate storm damage • Grants for community resilience hubs that provide cooling centers, emergency power, and shelter during extreme weather • Support for a just transition that protects workers in fossil fuel industries as we move toward a sustainable economy • International cooperation and leadership on binding global climate commitments Half measures and delayed timelines are no longer adequate responses. Every year of incremental policy has cost us ground we cannot get back. I understand that dramatic legislative action carries political and economic tradeoffs, and I don’t ask you to take that lightly, but the cost of inaction is measured in lives, livelihoods, and the stability of the world we leave behind. I am asking you to lead, not follow. Support legislation that treats this as the emergency it is. Future generations, and frankly all of us living through this right now, are depending on the choices made in this decade.
