I am deeply troubled by the escalating violence and lawless actions of ICE as reported. Detaining unconscious individuals, apprehending people by force resulting in injuries, restraining children with zip ties, arresting honor students without cause, ambushing people at immigration hearings, using unidentified masked agents - these abuses cannot be tolerated in a nation of laws. Additionally, the inhumane treatment in overcrowded detention facilities, wrongful detentions of US citizens, separations of mothers from nursing infants, and denial of lifesaving medical care to gravely ill children are egregious human rights violations that must cease immediately. Such conduct not only fails to uphold American values of justice and human dignity, but it undermines our nation's standing on the global stage. These tactics do nothing to resolve the complex issue of immigration reform through legitimate legislative and policy measures. Instead, they breed fear, injustice, and a disregard for due process that is unacceptable in a democratic society. I urge you to exercise rigorous congressional oversight over ICE and its private prison contractors to rein in this unchecked abuse of power. Investigate these disturbing reports, enforce transparency and accountability, and take decisive action to restore lawful and humane enforcement of immigration laws. The current path of extrajudicial abuse and terror must end, as it runs counter to our foundational principles as a nation.
