Save Section 230! Save the Open Internet!

To: Sen. Schumer, Rep. Mannion, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A verified voter in Fayetteville, NY

May 26

The internet as we know it is under immediate threat. Congress has introduced multiple bills—including the PROTECT Act (H.R. 7045), the Sunset Section 230 Act (H.R. 6746 / S. 3546), and the Stop the Censorship Act (H.R. 908)—that would repeal or radically rewrite Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. These bills would dismantle the very legal foundation of the open internet. We demand that you reject all attempts to repeal or sunset Section 230. Instead, you must preserve and protect this law, which does three critical things: 1. It protects our First Amendment rights online. Section 230 is "critical to giving voices to the voiceless" and allows political movements like #MeToo and the Arab Spring to flourish. Without it, any website would be liable for user comments, forcing them to end comments or censor content to avoid lawsuits. 2. It enables small businesses to compete. Section 230 protects small companies from expensive lawsuits and is "a key pathway toward increasing competition" against Big Tech. Repeal would "decimate small companies and grant big tech companies an advantage". 3. It empowers marginalized communities. The ACLU, EFF, and civil rights groups all agree that Section 230 allows people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others to "leverage online platforms for self-expression, community building, and civic engagement". Gutting the law would silence these voices. Repealing Section 230 would not solve legitimate problems of online harm—it would destroy the internet as an open forum. We call on you to listen to the free speech advocates, civil rights organizations, and small businesses who are fighting to preserve the law of the internet. The consequences of repeal are too severe. Protect Section 230. Protect the First Amendment. Defend our right to speak, share, and organize online.
