I am writing to urge you to take immediate action against the unconstitutional federal immigration enforcement operations currently underway in Minnesota. The deployment of approximately 3,000 federal agents to Minneapolis under Operation Metro Surge represents a dangerous escalation that violates constitutional limits on federal power and threatens the safety of all residents.
The fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old US citizen and mother of three, by ICE officer Jonathan Ross demonstrates the deadly consequences of this militarized approach. This tragedy was entirely avoidable. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has filed a lawsuit seeking to declare Operation Metro Surge unconstitutional and to reinstate policies that prevent raids at schools, hospitals, and houses of worship. These protections exist for good reason.
The tactics being employed are alarming. A 20-year-old Somali American man was put in a chokehold while attempting to prove his citizenship. Border Patrol agents have cited accents as grounds for questioning citizenship. An agent fired shots at a vehicle during an arrest attempt. These actions create a climate of fear where any resident can be subjected to force and detention based on appearance or speech patterns.
Operation Metro Surge, which began in December targeting Somali immigrants, appears to be politically motivated retaliation against a Democratic-led state. The administration's own statements suggest this is about punishment rather than public safety. The simultaneous termination of Temporary Protected Status for the 705 Somali nationals who have lived here legally since 1991 further reveals the targeting of specific communities.
I refuse to accept living in a police state where federal agents operate without accountability or constitutional restraint. I urge you to publicly support Minnesota's lawsuit, demand the withdrawal of these federal forces, and work to pass legislation that clearly limits federal immigration enforcement authority and protects constitutional rights. Our communities deserve safety from crime, not militarized occupation by federal agents.
