OPPOSE the INTERSTATE OBSCENITY DEFINITION ACT H. R. 3297

To: Rep. Stefanik, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A constituent in Plattsburgh, NY

August 7

I’m writing to you as a constituent to urge you to vote NO on H.R.3297 (and what ever nasty form it takes in the SENATE. Hopefully it does not get that far.), the Interstate Obscenity Definition Act. This bill threatens free speech and personal freedoms by redefining "obscenity" in a way that could criminalize consensual adult content and censor the internet. As someone who values a free and open internet, I’m deeply concerned about the impact this legislation could have on my rights and those of millions of Americans. H.R.3297’s vague language and removal of the "community standards" test risk violating the First Amendment by allowing the government to broadly ban protected speech. It could also disproportionately harm marginalized communities and silence creators who rely on the internet for expression and connection. A free internet is essential for education, communication, and personal autonomy—values I know you support. I respectfully ask that you vote NO on H.R.3297 to protect our constitutional rights and prevent dangerous overreach. Please let me know your position on this bill and how you plan to vote. I’d be happy to discuss this issue further with you or your staff. Thank you for your time and for representing our district. I look forward to your response.
