Strengthen Special Education Oversight in PA

To: Sen. Cappelletti, Gov. Shapiro, Rep. Briggs

From: A constituent in Wayne, PA

July 10

Strengthen Pennsylvania’s oversight and enforcement of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and hold school districts accountable when they fail students with disabilities. Regardless of changes at the federal level, Pennsylvania has a responsibility to ensure every child receives the free appropriate public education guaranteed by IDEA. Increase state monitoring of special education, improve transparency by publicly reporting compliance, ensure timely corrective action when violations occur, and provide the resources needed to enforce the law consistently across all school districts. Pennsylvania’s children with disabilities deserve strong accountability and meaningful enforcement—not weaker oversight.
