I just saw a report saying that our state wants to have people show “documentation” of their citizenship to get food assistance. This is wrong. Citizenship should not be leveraged against people who are hungry. I don’t care what religion you are, or where you are from. Basic human respect taught us to feed the hungry. Anyone who stands by a regulation to restrict food to those who need it is just plain cruel and unethical. Anyone who stands with those people who want to feed those who need help, those are true humanitarians and people I am proud to call Nebraskans. We are all just one medical emergency or natural disaster away from needing that help ourselves. Last year when the Elkhorn tornado went through, did those people have time to get their documentation? No. But they needed food the next morning. They lost everything. A regulation like this has no place in our state. Please fight against any regulation, requirement, or law that would require food banks to need that level of documentation.
