I am writing to express my strong support for expanding non-market housing options and addressing the current affordability crisis. The challenges faced in delivering non-profit, affordable homes are significant, but absolutely critical to ensuring all people have access to secure, adequate housing. The regulatory barriers, lengthy approval processes, misaligned government requirements, and lack of sufficient funding all contribute to delaying and increasing costs for non-market developments. This results in higher rents that undermine the very purpose of this vital housing. We need urgent reforms to streamline approvals, align metrics across jurisdictions, prioritize affordability goals, and increase grants and low-cost financing for non-profit projects. Non-market housing cannot solve the housing crisis alone, but it is an essential part of a healthy housing continuum with options at all income levels. By removing roadblocks to non-profit developments and coupling this with measures to boost overall housing supply, we can work towards a future where affordable housing is truly available to all who need it. I urge you to take decisive action to support the expansion of non-market homes in our communities.
