Iran Civilians

To: Sen. Warren, Rep. Lynch, Sen. Markey

From: A constituent in Quincy, MA

March 10

Dear Senator, I am writing to you as a citizen who believes this is one of those moments when history will judge whether leaders had the courage to speak plainly. Across the world, civilians are dying in wars that are escalating rapidly. Families are being destroyed. Children are being killed. Entire communities are being wiped out. In Ukraine, Russia continues to attack civilian infrastructure and residential areas. In Gaza, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed and entire neighborhoods have been flattened. Now, in Iran, reports indicate that a strike destroyed an elementary school in Minab, killing more than 170 people—most of them children—and evidence suggests that fragments recovered from the site are consistent with a U.S.-made Tomahawk missile. If American weapons are involved in the deaths of children, the American people deserve the truth. This is not a normal political moment. Wars are expanding. Civilian deaths are mounting. Rhetoric about destroying entire populations is being spoken openly. And yet many leaders in Washington are silent. At moments like this, silence is not neutrality. Silence becomes complicity. I am not writing to ask for carefully worded statements or procedural maneuvers in Washington. I am asking you to use the most powerful tool you have: your public voice. Speak to the American people. Hold press conferences. Go on television. Hold town halls. Tell the country clearly what is happening and what is being done in our name. Demand transparency about military actions that may be killing civilians. Demand accountability if international law has been violated. History will not remember how cautious political leaders were. It will remember who had the courage to stand up when innocent lives were being lost. Future generations will ask whether our leaders chose political safety or moral clarity. Please choose moral clarity. Speak publicly. Speak clearly. And refuse to remain silent while civilians—especially children—are dying in wars connected to the power of the United States
