I’m deeply concerned about the impact President Trump’s proposed import tax hikes will have on everyday Americans. These tariffs aren’t going to hit foreign companies—they’re going to hit us. Regular folks will feel it in the form of higher prices on just about everything: gas, groceries, clothes, shoes, appliances, electronics, even homes and cars. One study estimates the average American could end up paying $3,800 more a year for the same things we’re buying now. That’s not sustainable. And the fallout won’t stop there. Our trading partners will retaliate, and the result will be American job losses. We’ve seen this play out before under both the Trump and Biden administrations. Tariffs didn’t bring jobs back then, and there’s no evidence they will now. Even the United Auto Workers, the National Association of Manufacturers—and at one point, Trump himself—have warned against the damage a trade war could cause. Congress has the power to act. You gave the president broad authority to impose tariffs, and now it’s time to rein that in. There are multiple proposals on the table to limit or revoke that authority, and I urge you to support them. Please don’t let this economic wrecking ball swing freely. If Congress stands by, Americans will pay the price—not just in dollars, but in jobs and stability. It’s time to act.
