I am writing as a constituent who is exhausted, angry, and deeply concerned about the economic pain facing American families, pain that has now been confirmed by the United States Supreme Court to have been inflicted illegally. The Supreme Court has ruled that the Trump administration’s sweeping global tariffs were unlawful because the president exceeded constitutional authority and imposed what amounted to a massive tax on Americans without congressional approval. Let’s be clear about what this means in real life: American families were forced to pay higher prices for everyday goods under policies the Court has now determined should never have existed. Independent economic analysis shows these tariffs increased costs for the average household by roughly $1,000 in 2025 and an estimated $1,300 in 2026, money taken directly from families already struggling with inflation, housing costs, and stagnant wages. This was not abstract policy. This was money taken from working Americans. The federal government collected over $130 billion in tariff revenue, and as much as $175 billion may now be subject to refunds following the Court’s decision. That money belongs to the American people. Right now, families are drowning. Groceries cost more. Rent is crushing households. Parents are choosing between essentials. Meanwhile, Washington debates procedure while Americans wait for relief that should already be on its way. Congress must act immediately. I am demanding that you: 1. Support legislation requiring automatic refunds of illegally collected tariff revenue to Americans and small businesses. 2. Ensure compensation reaches households, not just large corporations or importers. 3. Provide interest payments on refunded funds to account for the financial harm caused. 4. Establish safeguards preventing any administration from imposing de facto taxes through emergency powers again. The Supreme Court has already spoken: these tariffs exceeded lawful authority. Now Congress must decide whether it will defend the American people or allow illegal economic harm to go unanswered. This moment requires courage. It requires representatives willing to stand up to executive overreach regardless of party, and restore faith that our government serves its citizens, not power. Americans are not asking for charity. We are asking for justice. We need leaders who will grow a spine, defend democracy, and deliver relief to the people you were elected to represent. I expect to see immediate action and a public commitment to returning this money to the American people.
