I am writing as your constituent to urge you to introduce or support legislation repealing Public Acts 526 and 527 of 2017 (MCL 18.1261 and MCL 123.1651). Currently, state law prohibits government entities from contracting with businesses that participate in political or commercial boycotts, specifically targeting trade with Israel. This requirement forces Michigan small businesses and local contractors to sign political pledge certifications just to bid on public infrastructure, school, and municipal projects. These laws harm our state in three distinct ways: 1 Violating Free Speech: A business owner's eligibility to bid on state contracts should be evaluated strictly on qualifications, safety, and price—not on their peaceful political or ethical choices. 2 Harm to Local Businesses: Michigan contractors should not be disqualified from receiving public taxpayer dollars due to political screening requirements. 3 Reducing Market Competition: Disqualifying qualified vendors shrinks the bidding pool, driving up costs for public infrastructure projects at the expense of Michigan taxpayers. Please protect constitutional free speech and restore open, competitive bidding by sponsoring legislation to strip political oath requirements from Michigan procurement laws.
