Urgently End Government Shutdown to Support Federal Workers
To: Rep. McCormick

October 24
The ongoing government shutdown is causing severe hardship for 1.4 million federal workers who have just missed their first full paycheck. This situation is unacceptable and demands your immediate action to reopen the government.
Half of these workers are furloughed, while the other half are deemed essential and working without pay. The impact is already visible in our communities. In Prince George's County, Maryland, the Capital Area Food Bank's distribution for federal workers saw demand exceed initial supply, highlighting the immediate financial strain these dedicated public servants are facing.
While some credit unions and organizations like the Community Services Agency of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO, are offering support, these are temporary measures. The longer this shutdown continues, the more severe the economic repercussions will be, particularly in areas with high concentrations of federal workers.
I urge you to prioritize ending this shutdown immediately. While the 2019 law ensures back pay for federal employees once the shutdown ends, the uncertainty and current financial stress are taking a toll on workers and their families. Moreover, President Trump has suggested that not all furloughed workers may receive back pay, which is deeply concerning.
The administration's 'budgetary twister' to ensure payment for some workers deemed critical to the President's priorities is not a sustainable or fair solution. All federal workers deserve their pay, not just a select few.
As your constituent, I implore you to work across party lines to find a resolution and reopen the government. The livelihoods of 1.4 million Americans and the stability of our communities depend on swift action. Please do not let partisan politics overshadow the urgent needs of hardworking federal employees and their families.
