Prevent HUD from throwing away the Equal Access Rule for housing. For years, the Equal Access Rule has prevented discrimination in federally funded housing programs – including domestic violence shelters and homeless shelters.
These facilities – and this rule – are life-saving. Transgender people are four times as likely to experience violence as their peers – and the vast majority of it is domestic violence. As a result of widespread discrimination, nearly one in three trans people has experienced homelessness in their lifetime. Having this legal protection ensures trans people are able to get help when they need it most.
But Trump's amoral & cruel proposal would take away these critical protections, undoing that progress and potentially forcing HUD-funded shelter providers to turn away transgender or intersex people seeking emergency housing services.
