An Open Letter

To: Rep. Moolenaar, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Rockford, MI

August 13

I am a voting constituent writing to express my strong opposition to proposed immigration fee increases and the targeted elimination of fee waivers for low-income individuals. Citizenship and legal status in this nation must never become a luxury reserved strictly for the wealthy. Drastically raising filing fees while stripping away essential fee waivers creates an insurmountable financial barrier for working-class families, asylum seekers, and legal immigrants who contribute dutifully to our communities. Expecting low-income applicants to pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket simply to process basic paperwork forces vulnerable households into severe financial hardship or forces them out of the legal system entirely. Fee waivers exist to guarantee that legal immigration pathways remain equitable, functional, and grounded in fairness rather than financial privilege. Denying low-income applicants these critical relief mechanisms undermines justice, fractures families, and harms local economies that rely on a stable, legally integrated workforce. I urge you to block these fee hikes immediately and preserve vital fee waivers. Ensure that our immigration system remains fair, accessible, and accountable to foundational principles of human dignity.
