The impact of SB 12 has lead to school staff, including nurses, not able to offer medical support to students when they are hurt during the school day. So far, a child scraped his knee and the nurse was unable to offer him support of any form,. She gave him a bandaid but the child had to apply. There's many students at this school. For each incident, the nurse and teacher must first validate if they have a form. Then attend to them or otherwise instruct them to return to class in pain and unattended to. How are you explaining to children that we're not able to help them? It would probably help if you talked at school boards to parents and children about how to explain that school staff are unable to care for them on campus.
If parents choose to not permit nurse assistance at all, perhaps we should require them to discuss with their children why they refuse to trust school staff.
If a child, like mine, breaks a tooth on the playground, this might not be considered a medical emergency. If i hadn't opted in to the premium care, she would have been required to sit back in class for the remaining school day. This terrifies me for other children who are on this situation. Maybe they aren't neglectful parents, but had limited time to fill out the additional form. I understand your team thought this was an emergency that gave parents And schools three days on a holiday weekend to respond. I'm not understanding that urgency, and this law has proven damaging.
