I am writing to urge you to take immediate action against the so-called Board of Peace that President Trump is assembling. While several countries have joined this initiative, some European nations have already declined invitations, recognizing the threat it poses to established democratic alliances.
This Board of Peace undermines NATO at a moment when the alliance faces unprecedented strain. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has already characterized Trump's recent actions, including his bid to take over Greenland, as posing a "deep crisis" for NATO. European leaders at the World Economic Forum have expressed strong concerns about Trump's threats over Greenland and global trade issues. The EU is now preparing countermeasures against the United States in response to these destabilizing actions. Trump's Board of Peace appears designed to further fracture Western unity while elevating authoritarian leaders who do not share our democratic values.
The composition of this board raises serious questions about conflicts of interest and potential violations of the emoluments clause. When a president creates international bodies that include nations and leaders with whom he may have business interests, Congress has a constitutional duty to investigate whether he is using his office for personal enrichment. The American people deserve transparency about who sits on this board, what authority it claims, and what financial benefits may flow to Trump or his businesses as a result.
I am asking you to publicly oppose the Board of Peace, demand full disclosure of its membership and funding sources, and support efforts to strengthen rather than undermine NATO. If evidence emerges that Trump is using this initiative to enrich himself, I urge you to support impeachment proceedings. Our national security and the integrity of the presidency depend on Congress exercising its oversight responsibilities.
