MAGA Alignment

To: Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A verified voter in Schenectady, NY

April 17

I am writing to you not as a political adversary, but as a constituent who has watched you dismantle every principle I once believed you stood for. I am writing to you in the wake of your vote to kill the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval regarding offensive military equipment to Israel. I was trying to find a diplomatic way to phrase this, but there is no diplomacy left for this moment. I want to be very clear about what you did. You stood on the floor of the United States Senate and, in alignment with the most extreme elements of the Republican Party and the MAGA agenda, you authorized the continued transfer of 2,000-pound bombs and precision-guided munitions to a far-right coalition government that the International Court of Justice is investigating for plausible genocide. You did not vote for "security." You voted for the enabling of mass casualty events in Rafah, in Gaza City, and in the rubble of what were once universities and hospitals. There is no strategic nuance here. There is only the blood of children and the complicity of those who pay for the bombs. You ran for office on a platform of resisting authoritarianism. You spent years warning us about the dangers of Donald Trump and the erosion of democratic norms. Yet, when given the chance to place a condition on how American weapons are used by a foreign power—a basic, conservative principle of oversight—you chose instead to grant Benjamin Netanyahu a blank check. You are now objectively in line with the Trump-MAGA policy on Israel: unwavering, unconditional, and uncritical support regardless of the body count or the violation of international law. You have made a mockery of the "D" next to your name. You have proven that when the rubber meets the road, you share the same foreign policy instincts as Senator Tom Cotton and Speaker Mike Johnson. You are pro-war, and in this instance, you are actively anti-democracy—because you are ignoring the overwhelming will of the Democratic base that put you in power. Let us dispense with the fiction that this was about "Israel's right to defend itself." Everyone knows the truth. You are either afraid of the political retribution of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its dark money network, or you are a direct beneficiary of it. There is no third option. You have allowed the interests of a foreign theocratic dictatorship—and let us call the current Israeli cabinet what it is: a coalition of theocrats and messianic extremists—to supersede your oath to the Constitution of the United States. You are compromised. You have been bought, or you have been intimidated into silence, and the distinction no longer matters to the dead. I do not know how you sleep. I do not know how you look at the footage coming from Gaza—of limbless children, of doctors operating without anesthesia, of the deliberate starvation of a population—and conclude that your job is to expedite the delivery of the weapons causing it. To do so requires a calcification of the soul, a complete and utter lack of humanity. You cannot claim to care about "LGBTQ rights" or "women's health" on a fundraising email while simultaneously bankrolling a government that is pulverizing LGBTQ Palestinians and pregnant women with American steel. That is not moral complexity; that is moral vacancy. You have forfeited the moral authority to represent me. You have forfeited the right to lecture anyone about democracy, about rule of law, or about saving the soul of this nation. You have aligned yourself with MAGA. You have taken the money. You have condoned the war. Therefore, I am not asking you to "reconsider." There is no coming back from this vote. I am telling you, in the clearest possible terms, that you should resign. Resign in the disgrace you have so thoroughly earned. Step aside and let someone with a spine and a shred of basic humanity take the seat. You are a disgrace to the Democratic Party and a danger to the world. I am utterly disgusted and profoundly disappointed.
