End Legislative Brinkmanship and Outlaw Political Hostage-Taking

To: Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Bergman, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Beulah, MI

June 24

On June 24, 2026, a critical, bipartisan piece of legislation—the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act—passed both chambers of Congress with overwhelming, veto-proof majorities (85-5 in the Senate and 358-32 in the House). This historic bill directly addresses the severe housing affordability crisis impacting millions of working-class families by banning large corporate investors from buying up single-family homes and streamlining standard inspection and construction processes. Mortgage Professional America Despite this overwhelming mandate, the executive branch has engaged in standard legislative brinkmanship, abruptly canceling the bill-signing ceremony and explicitly threatening to withhold a signature on this crucial housing relief until Congress passes an entirely separate, highly controversial voting package (the SAVE America Act). CBS News Using essential public welfare, housing relief, or government funding bills as "political hostages" to force unrelated political agendas is a direct violation of a public servant's duty to the American people. This type of brinkmanship punishes everyday citizens for political leverage. The Demand: I demand that Congress introduce and pass comprehensive accountability legislation to make political hostage-taking a criminal or impeachable offense for high-level officials, including the President and Vice President. Specifically, this legislation should: 1 Define Legislative Extortion: Establish strict legal boundaries making it an abuse of power for any member of the executive or legislative branch to explicitly condition their constitutional signature, veto, or vote on a completely unrelated piece of passed legislation. 2 Enforce Mandatory Timelines: Strengthen the enforcement of the 10-day constitutional window, ensuring that popular, bipartisan legislation cannot be frozen or delayed past the legal limit as a tool of political warfare. 3 Establish Clear Penalties: Ensure that using essential federal assistance packages (like housing, disaster relief, or standard funding) as an aggressive bargaining chip triggers immediate independent ethics investigations and acts as grounds for formal censure or impeachment. Our housing security and economic well-being should never be used as a bargaining chip in a political showdown. I urge you to stand up for your constituents, refuse to back down to executive leverage, and support legislation that outlaws political hostage-taking once and for all.
