I’m writing to express my deep alarm over the recent use of executive orders to target and intimidate lawyers — professionals whose duty is to uphold the law and defend the rights of the people. This type of political retaliation is a dangerous and unacceptable abuse of presidential power.
When lawyers can be singled out and punished for doing their jobs, who is left to defend the rest of us? If the executive branch is allowed to cow and silence the legal advocates who stand between the government and the people, then every American’s rights are at risk. This is not only a threat to individual lawyers but to the entire justice system and the rule of law itself.
No president should be allowed to turn the power of the government against private citizens, public servants, or the legal professionals who ensure our democracy functions fairly. I urge you to take immediate action to investigate and halt these abuses, and to pass legislation that protects against this kind of authoritarian overreach in the future.
Silencing the legal community weakens every American's constitutional protections. I expect you to stand up for the rule of law and defend the people who defend us.
