30-Year DOJ Veteran Called “Revenge Prosecutions Unparalleled in U.S. History”

At a 2024 rally, Donald Trump told supporters: “I am your justice. I am your retribution.” In the 15 months since, a 30-year DOJ veteran published a report calling his use of the justice system “revenge prosecutions unparalleled in U.S. history.” Trump wrote on Truth Social that former FBI Director James Comey, NY Attorney General Letitia James, and Senator Adam Schiff were “all guilty as hell.” When the career U.S. Attorney handling the Comey case resisted bringing charges, Trump fired him and installed his own personal lawyer, Lindsey Halligan, who had no prosecutorial experience. Halligan indicted Comey and James within days. A federal judge threw both cases out in November 2025, ruling Halligan was unconstitutionally appointed. The DOJ tried twice more to indict James with different grand juries. Both refused.
Comey’s daughter Maurene, a senior federal prosecutor with nearly a decade of experience, was fired in July 2025, the day after taking the lead on a major corruption case. Trump had privately complained she worked in his administration. Her wrongful termination lawsuit was allowed to proceed April 28, 2026. John Bolton was indicted in October 2025. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell was served with investigative subpoenas. A federal judge found the subpoenas were designed to pressure Powell to cut interest rates, not investigate a crime. In November 2025, six Democratic lawmakers, all military veterans, released a video reminding troops they are not required to follow illegal orders. Trump called it “seditious behavior, punishable by DEATH.” The DOJ brought it to a grand jury. The grand jury refused to indict. Former U.S. Attorney Harry Litman called the case “completely bogus,” adding it was “surpassingly rare” for a grand jury to push back that hard. The DOJ’s Public Integrity Section, which exists to prevent political abuse of the justice system, has gone from 36 prosecutors to 2.
Pass legislation requiring DOJ investigations into public officials to be reported to an independent inspector general. Restore the Public Integrity Section. Pass the DOJ Independence Act. Hold hearings on the use of subpoenas as political pressure tools. A president who uses criminal law to punish his enemies isn’t enforcing it. He’s corrupting it.
