Ratify CEDAW and CRPD to Protect Mothers With Postpartum Mental Illness

To: Rep. Tenney, Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A constituent in Hemlock, NY

September 9

I urge you to support U.S. ratification of CEDAW and the CRPD.The Lindsay Clancy case has exposed how poorly we treat postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. These are medical emergencies. People who seek help still face delayed care, stigma, fear of losing custody, and a legal system that often fails them. The U.S. signed CEDAW in 1980 and the CRPD in 2009 but has never ratified either. CEDAW requires equal access to pregnancy and postnatal health care. The CRPD requires care and legal protections for psychosocial disabilities. Together they would bind the United States to treat perinatal mental illness as both a women’s health-rights issue and a disability-rights issue. Please support Senate advice and consent to both treaties, and back domestic laws that expand screening, specialized postpartum care, and fair legal protections.
