Investigate the Whereabouts of Detainees Transferred from "Alligator Alcatraz"

To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Casar, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Manor, TX

July 16

I need you to launch an immediate investigation into what happened to the detainees transferred out of the South Florida Detention Center. Families and attorneys lost all contact with their loved ones and clients for approximately a week during these transfers. Nobody — not lawyers, not families — received official notice before people were moved. That is not a bureaucratic oversight. That is a government making people disappear. DHS has refused to say how many people were moved, where they went, or whether anyone was harmed or died in transit or at the receiving facilities. Attorney Katie Blankenship confirmed her 50 clients were scattered across South Florida, California, Arizona, Louisiana, and Texas — but that accounting came from advocates doing their own detective work, not from any government transparency. The ACLU has already sued over the facility's denial of legal access, and the conditions there — worms in food, fecal flooding, no functioning toilets — were documented and ignored for months. I want a full accounting: how many people were held, where every single one of them is now, and whether anyone died or was seriously harmed at this facility or during transfer. The hurricane rationale is not credible — this facility opened in the middle of hurricane season last year. Demand that DHS provide that information publicly, and commit to ensuring this site never holds people again.
