I am writing to express my strong support for the resolution Senator Bernie Sanders plans to bring to the Senate floor, calling for an arms embargo on Israel. This resolution is not only legally sound but also rooted in the principles of justice and human rights that the United States has historically championed. For decades, Israel has been the largest recipient of U.S. military aid. However, numerous reports and expert assessments, including from former State Department official Charles Blaha, have documented gross human rights violations committed by Israeli security forces. These include indiscriminate attacks on civilians, disproportionate use of force, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Under the Leahy Law, the United States is prohibited from providing military assistance to foreign security units involved in gross human rights violations unless those responsible are held accountable. Yet, political appointees in the State Department have shielded Israel from enforcement of this law, creating a dangerous double standard that weakens our standing on human rights and makes us complicit in these abuses. Senator Sanders’ resolution is a necessary corrective to this longstanding hypocrisy. By imposing an arms embargo on Israel, the United States would send a clear message that our support for human rights is universal and that no country is above the law. This action would not only bring U.S. policy in line with its legal obligations but also pressure Israel to pursue a peaceful resolution to the conflict, rather than perpetuate cycles of violence. I urge you to support this resolution and stand on the side of justice and international law. The U.S. must stop providing unconditional military support to a government that continues to violate the rights of Palestinians and undermine efforts for a sustainable peace.
