I am writing because I am deeply concerned about the need to preserve constitutional limits on presidential power and ensure that the president is subject to the law like every other person in the United States. Recent statements and social-media posts by President Trump depicting Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland, Cuba, Central America, and other territories under the United States flag have alarmed me. I understand that an image posted online is not necessarily a formal policy announcement. However, repeated threats, suggestions of territorial expansion, and actions that appear to disregard established legal and diplomatic limits should not be treated as harmless rhetoric. The United States is governed by laws and a Constitution—not by the personal wishes of any president. The president has important responsibilities in foreign policy and national security, but those powers are not unlimited. They must remain subject to congressional oversight, judicial review, statutory requirements, and the constitutional rights of the American people. I am concerned that insufficient accountability could: • Put American service members and civilians in unnecessary danger. • Undermine relations with Canada, Mexico, Iceland, Denmark, NATO, and other democratic partners. • Damage the constitutional separation of powers. • Allow the executive branch to disregard laws, treaties, court orders, or congressional requirements. • Create long-term economic and security burdens for future generations. • Establish precedents that could be abused by any future president, regardless of political party. I respectfully ask you to take the following actions: 1. Defend the principle that no president is above the law. 2. Conduct meaningful congressional oversight of presidential statements, directives, negotiations, deployments, and policies involving other sovereign countries. 3. Require the administration to provide Congress with clear information about any territorial claims, military plans, or actions that could lead to conflict. 4. Enforce existing laws governing the use of military force, congressional authorization, appropriations, treaties, sanctions, and executive conduct. 5. Oppose the use of public funds or military force for actions that violate the Constitution or lack lawful authorization. 6. Support investigations, hearings, subpoenas, and other lawful oversight measures when the executive branch refuses to comply with congressional requirements. 7. Defend the authority of the courts and insist that executive officials comply with valid judicial orders. 8. Consider additional legislation where existing safeguards are inadequate to prevent presidential abuse of power. I am not asking Congress to interfere with legitimate presidential responsibilities. I am asking Congress to perform its constitutional duty to maintain checks and balances. A president should have enough authority to carry out lawful responsibilities, but not enough authority to ignore Congress, defy the courts, violate statutes, threaten other nations without accountability, or place Americans in danger without lawful justification. The principle at stake is larger than any one president or political party. If presidents are allowed to disregard the law without meaningful consequences, future presidents will inherit and potentially expand that power. My concern is therefore not only about current events, but about the country future generations will inherit. Please tell me what steps you and your office will take to uphold constitutional limits on presidential power and ensure that the president is held accountable under the law.
