Call out erosion of democratic norms - stand w Padilla and others

To: Sen. King, Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree

From: A verified voter in South Portland, ME

June 17

Democratic norms and principles are the bedrock of our society, yet we are witnessing an alarming erosion of these values. The recent incident involving Senator Padilla serves as a stark reminder of how fragile our democratic institutions have become when power is left unchecked. It is unacceptable for a duly elected representative to be forcibly restrained and silenced merely for posing a question during an official government briefing. This egregious violation of free speech and congressional oversight represents a dangerous departure from our nation's cherished traditions of civil discourse and accountability. We must collectively safeguard the fundamental rights and liberties that define our democracy. Allowing such authoritarian overreach to persist unchallenged sets a perilous precedent that threatens the very foundations of our republic. It is time to reject the normalization of these undemocratic actions and reassert the principles of transparency, due process, and respect for the rule of law. We call upon all citizens and elected officials, regardless of party affiliation, to stand firm in defense of our democratic ideals and work tirelessly to restore the guardrails that have protected our nation for centuries.
