Impeach Trump, Hegseth, and Vance for Unconstitutional Military Action in Nigeria

To: Sen. Duckworth, Sen. Durbin, Rep. Quigley

From: A constituent in Chicago, IL

February 4

I am writing to demand immediate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Vice President JD Vance for unauthorized use of military force against Nigeria. On December 25, the United States launched airstrikes against an Islamic State-affiliated group in Nigeria without congressional authorization, violating the constitutional requirement that Congress alone holds the power to declare war. The Constitution grants Congress exclusive authority to authorize military action. The December 25 airstrikes, followed by the recent deployment of U.S. military officers to Nigeria, represent a dangerous escalation of unauthorized military engagement in West Africa. Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson, commander of U.S. Africa Command, confirmed this deployment occurred after meetings between Anderson and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, yet Congress was never consulted or asked to authorize these military operations. President Trump has publicly threatened to attack Nigeria, falsely alleging the country is not protecting Christian citizens and designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern for religious oppression. The Nigerian government has categorically rejected these claims, stating that armed groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province target people regardless of religious faith. The January attack on three churches in Kaduna state that resulted in 168 abductions demonstrates the indiscriminate nature of these security threats, not targeted religious persecution by the Nigerian government. This administration is conducting military operations, supplying equipment, and flying reconnaissance missions across a sovereign nation based on false pretenses and without congressional approval. This is precisely the type of executive overreach the founders sought to prevent through constitutional checks and balances. Vice President Vance should focus his attention on this constitutional crisis rather than whatever distractions currently occupy his time. I urge you to immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump, Hegseth, and Vance for this flagrant violation of constitutional war powers. The precedent of allowing unauthorized military strikes and deployments cannot stand. Congress must act now to restore constitutional order.
