I just learned that the “Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026” has been introduced in the House and Senate. I am writing to urge you to oppose this bill at every step. Climate change has been pushed out of the media spotlight, but it is the single greatest threat facing our nation and humanity. Migration and war are driven by drought and other climate impacts. Research suggests that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) collapse is potentially imminent, a change that would threaten human society. In this context, this act would shield fossil fuel companies from responsibility for their role in the catastrophe. The idea is absurd on its face and the way that the bill defines “energy” companies to exclude renewable energy makes clear its true purpose. This act is a bad policy idea on its face and would have devastating long term consequences. You should work to make sure it never becomes law.
