I am a constituent from Cathedral City, California, writing to express my deep concern about the forced removal and detention of Andry Hernández Romero, a gay asylum seeker from Venezuela, under the Alien Enemies Act.
Andry fled Venezuela to escape political and anti-LGBTQ+ persecution, seeking refuge and protection in the United States. Instead, he was wrongfully disappeared to CECOT—a notorious prison in El Salvador—without due process or legal recourse. This action is not only inhumane but a blatant violation of fundamental rights.
The government’s justification for his removal hinges on crown tattoos honoring his parents and rooted in a local Christian festival tradition—mistakenly cited as evidence of gang affiliation. Such assumptions are reckless and discriminatory, putting countless lives in danger based on flawed profiling and wartime legal loopholes.
I urge you to:
1. Demand the immediate and unconditional release of Andry Hernández Romero and others removed without due process under the Alien Enemies Act.
2. Ensure full access to legal counsel and communication for all individuals subjected to this treatment.
3. Call for a thorough investigation into the use of wartime powers against asylum seekers and work to restore legal protections for those fleeing persecution.
This is a matter of justice, human rights, and our nation’s commitment to due process. I respectfully ask for your leadership in protecting the vulnerable and upholding the principles of our democracy.
