I'm asking you to sign the Senate letter supporting funding for the Library Services and Technology Act and the Innovative Approaches to Literacy program before the April 17 deadline.
The White House's FY27 budget proposal would eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services entirely, along with the IAL school library program. This isn't new. The president proposed killing IMLS in four consecutive budgets during his first term. Congress rejected those cuts every time and actually increased library funding all four years, including a $1.4 million boost in FY26.
Libraries in our community serve older adults and veterans accessing telehealth, unemployed workers building job skills, families relying on story time, and students conducting research. Federal courts have already struck down the administration's attempts to dismantle IMLS through executive action. Now Congress needs to finish the job by funding these programs.
The House letters gathered 134 signatures for LSTA and 77 for IAL in March. The Senate needs to show the same support. Sign both letters and protect the only federal agency dedicated to supporting libraries nationwide.
