The Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 aims to repeal the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) that currently reduce Social Security benefits for many public sector retirees such as teachers, firefighters, and police officers. These provisions have unfairly penalized hard-working Americans employed in public service jobs like these by diminishing or eliminating the Social Security benefits they earned through years of contributing to the system. Repealing the GPO and WEP would help ensure that citizens that have devoted their careers to public service receive their full Social Security benefits upon retirement. These workers have paid into Social Security from their wages over the course of their careers, yet the current laws unjustly cut into the benefits they deserve. The unions and the multitude of members are supporting this bill.
