Protect Transgender Rights to Prevent Forced Emigration

To: Sen. Peters, Rep. Walberg, Sen. Slotkin

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

November 29

I am writing to express my deep concern about the alarming trend of transgender individuals and their families feeling compelled to leave the United States due to increasing threats to their safety and rights. This exodus is not just a personal tragedy for those involved, but a national shame that undermines our values of equality and freedom. Recent reports have highlighted the growing number of trans people emigrating, primarily to countries like Portugal, in response to rising anti-trans sentiment and policies in our nation. These individuals and families are making the heart-wrenching decision to abandon their homes, communities, and country out of fear for their safety and well-being. This situation eerily echoes historical periods of persecution, with some drawing parallels to Jewish families fleeing Europe before World War II. The existence of support networks and resources like the Trans World Express website underscores the severity of this issue. When our citizens feel the need to seek asylum elsewhere, it speaks volumes about the failure of our society to protect its most vulnerable members. The fact that trans individuals from the U.S. face legal challenges in seeking asylum abroad, due to our nation's perceived status as a rights-abiding democracy, only adds to the urgency of addressing this crisis at home. I implore you to take immediate action to protect the rights and safety of transgender individuals in our country. This includes opposing any legislation that discriminates against trans people, supporting comprehensive anti-discrimination laws, and promoting education and awareness to combat transphobia. We must ensure that no American is forced to choose between their identity and their homeland. The strength of our nation lies in its diversity and inclusivity. By allowing anti-trans policies and sentiment to flourish, we not only harm individuals and families but also diminish our standing as a beacon of freedom and human rights. I urge you to stand on the right side of history and work tirelessly to create a United States where all people, regardless of their gender identity, can live safely and with dignity.
