Restore Economic Hardship Exemptions for Student Loan Debt

To: Sen. McCormick, Rep. Kelly, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Butler, PA

March 28

I need you to restore economic hardship and unemployment exemptions for student loan debt discharge. Eliminating these protections traps people in permanent debt they cannot escape, no matter how dire their circumstances become. When someone loses their job or faces financial catastrophe, they should have a path to relief. Without hardship exemptions, borrowers who become disabled, unemployed, or destitute remain shackled to debt they have no means to repay. This creates a system where people work solely to service loans they can never pay off, with no hope of building a life or supporting a family. That's not a functioning economy. That's forced labor. Other debts can be discharged through bankruptcy when people hit rock bottom. Student loans should not be the exception. The current system punishes people for circumstances beyond their control and ensures that economic hardship becomes permanent rather than temporary. Restore these exemptions immediately. People facing unemployment or financial ruin deserve the same protections available for other forms of debt. No one should be forced into lifelong debt servitude because they sought an education.
