Maintain Housing First Approach to Address Homelessness Crisis

To: Sen. Cantwell, Rep. Schrier, Sen. Murray

From: A constituent in Snoqualmie, WA

November 15

**Maintain Housing First Approach to Address Homelessness Crisis** I am writing to express my deep concern over the Trump administration's proposed changes to homelessness policy, which threaten to undermine the proven Housing First approach. This shift away from long-term housing towards transitional housing with work and addiction treatment requirements is not only misguided but potentially dangerous for our most vulnerable citizens. The Housing First model has a demonstrated track record of success in addressing homelessness. By providing stable housing without preconditions, it creates a foundation from which individuals can address other challenges in their lives. The proposed policy changes, however, risk displacing up to 170,000 people from their current housing situations, exacerbating rather than alleviating the homelessness crisis. While the administration claims these changes will promote 'self-sufficiency,' they ignore the complex realities faced by those experiencing homelessness. Many individuals require stable housing before they can effectively engage in work or treatment programs. By making housing contingent on these factors, we risk pushing more people onto the streets. The decision to no longer automatically renew existing programs is particularly troubling. This could force out individuals and families who have relied on subsidized housing for years, potentially undoing years of progress and stability in their lives. I urge you to oppose these changes and advocate for maintaining and expanding Housing First programs. The increase in overall homelessness funding from $3.6 billion to $3.9 billion is welcome, but it must be directed towards evidence-based solutions like Housing First, not ideologically driven policies that lack empirical support. Time is of the essence. With these changes set to be implemented soon, programs will have little time to adapt or apply for new funding. This rushed approach could lead to chaos in our homelessness support systems and cause immense harm to those we aim to help. I ask that you take immediate action to protect Housing First programs and the people they serve. Please work with your colleagues to maintain this crucial approach to addressing homelessness, ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens are not left without a roof over their heads due to misguided policy changes.
