US RESPONSIBLE FOR NUSEIRAT MASSACRE

To: Sen. Butler, Rep. Huffman, Pres. Biden, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Eureka, CA

June 9

I am writing to urgently bring to your attention a recent massacre of 210 Palestinians in Gaza that highlights the blatant disregard for human life by Israeli forces. The operation infiltrated the Nuseirat refugee camp whilst posing as a humanitarian aid truck, before open-firing on civilians in a busy marketplace. With millions of Palestinians forcibly displaced into the central Gaza Strip, the Nuseirat market was crowded with people searching for food when the attack took place. The ground assault was compounded by an air operation that bombed surrounding residential areas, causing further chaos as civilians fled for safety. The mission’s primary objective was to retrieve four captives, who were flown out of Gaza via the US pier, reinstated just one day earlier. Despite this being one of the bloodiest assaults on Palestinians in the past eight months, the operation has been deemed a “success” by Netanyahu, and commended by the White House, deeming the death of 52 Palestinians for each captive retrieved as an acceptable ratio. The retrieval of 4 captives at the expense of the lives of more than 210 Palestinians underscores the disproportionate disregard for the sanctity and equality of lives. Prisoner exchanges took place under a ceasefire in November, but Israel’s determination to avoid a ceasefire at all costs guarantees further loss of life. The international community cannot remain silent in the face of such grave atrocities. It is our collective responsibility to stand up for justice, accountability, and the inherent dignity of every individual, regardless of their nationality or ethnicity. The situation in Gaza is beyond catastrophic, as war crimes and atrocities continue to be committed by Israel with impunity. Immediate action is needed. The inaction of governments around the world only serves to perpetuate the cycle of impunity and enables further abuses to occur unchecked. Words alone are insufficient; we must demand concrete action to hold Israel accountable for its crimes. I implore you to stand by these directives and take immediate steps to halt all arms sales to Israel, sanction the apartheid state, implement a two-way trade embargo, and freeze all overseas assets belonging to this rogue state. Failure to act in the face of this grave and deliberate humanitarian catastrophe is not acceptable. We all bear a responsibility to halt this genocide and lend our voice to ending this atrocity, I hope you will do the same.
