I am writing as both a veteran and a federal employee with the Department of the Navy. I have devoted my life to serving this nation—first in uniform and now as a civilian supporting our national defense. Today, I am deeply troubled by the ongoing government shutdown and the serious financial and emotional toll it is taking on veterans and fellow federal employees across the country.
Federal workers are proud to serve. We uphold the mission of our agencies with professionalism, integrity, and dedication, even in times of uncertainty. Yet, once again, our livelihoods are being held hostage by political gridlock. Many of my colleagues—some of whom live paycheck to paycheck—are now struggling to pay bills, feed their families, and meet financial obligations, all while remaining committed to their duties. Veterans, who have already sacrificed for this nation, are among those most directly harmed by these unnecessary disruptions. The continued use of federal employees as bargaining tools in political disputes is unacceptable. It undermines trust in our government and disrespects the very people who ensure it continues to function—often without pay or recognition.
I urge you to lead with honesty, integrity, and accountability. Work across party lines to restore funding immediately and implement long-term measures to prevent future shutdowns. Our government should never reach a point where dedicated public servants and veterans bear the brunt of political stalemate.
We need leaders who place service above politics—leaders who understand that stability, respect, and integrity are the foundation of effective governance. I hope you will stand among them.
