An Open Letter

To: Rep. Ezell, Sen. Hyde-Smith, Sen. Wicker, Pres. Biden

From: A constituent in Poplarville, MS

In the early morning hours, US time, people were told to begin evacuating Rafah. This came just 24 hours after Al Jazeera was effectively banned from Israel. Originally Rafah, a small town, was only home to about 280,000 people. It is currently housing well over a million people—including 600,000 children. With Rafah being the last border out of Gaza, people went there to shelter because they were told it was supposed to be a “safe zone,” despite the fact that people had been starved, bombarded, and living in less-than-humane living conditions for months. After months of isolating Rafah and all Palestinians, cutting off humanitarian aid, the massacres of journalists, and destroying hospitals, Israel announced that people have to flee Rafah—despite having no where else to go. These well over a million people cannot all afford to enter Egypt, and even if they could, they can’t all cross the border in time. Despite all of this, just mere hours after announcing that all people needed to evacuate Rafah, the Israeli military began their ground invasion of Rafah. This is on the heels of what we’ve seen after the last several days of the community being endlessly bombarded—whole neighborhoods and blocks decimated. We are on the cusp of one of the greatest humanitarian failings of recent history. The United States has done nothing but aid Israel in the annihilation of the Palestinian people. Now is the time to do good. Now is the time to STOP THIS WAR and stop funding Israel. Call for israel to agree to an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
