I was shocked but not surprised by the arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil. I am shocked and surprised by the lack of immediate and strong response from Congress. This arrest is CLEARLY illegal. We still have free speech in this country and the right to protest. Mahmoud Khalil is a green card holder with a pregnant wife. The administration has no criminal evidence against him. If this action is allowed to stand, we have finally slipped into an autocracy where freedom of speech, freedom of protest — freedoms of ALL our rights — is at risk.
