Defend Democracy Against Political Deception
Our country faces an existential crisis rooted in the systemic use of political deception to undermine public trust, manipulate elections, and destabilize our institutions. Our legal system currently tolerates a dangerous double standard: corporate executives face prison for fraudulent statements, yet politicians can intentionally lie to the public with total impunity.
We must close this dangerous legal loophole. I urge you to look to other resilient democracies and craft legislation that treats intentional, factual deception by public officials as a severe breach of public trust. We need laws that extend the core principles of truth-in-advertising to the political sphere, establishing transparent due process to investigate intentional falsehoods. Furthermore, we must enact measures ensuring that any public official convicted of a felony or verified intentional fraud is automatically removed from office, creating an absolute incompatibility between public service and institutional deceit.
The First Amendment protects open debate, but it was never intended to shield deliberate fraud that dismantles the democratic process. Please exercise the courage and creativity needed to pass these reforms.
