The unchecked deregulation effort by the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is deeply concerning. The use of an AI tool to identify and remove over 1,000 federal regulations with minimal human oversight raises significant legal and ethical questions. The claim that this AI-driven deregulation will save trillions in compliance costs is unsubstantiated, and the assertion that it will reduce man-hours by 93% is questionable. There are already reports of errors made by the AI in misinterpreting regulatory language at agencies like HUD where it has been tested. Unilateral repeal of lawful regulations through an opaque AI process undermines the rule of law and democratic accountability. Regulations exist to protect public interests like consumer safety, worker rights, environmental quality, and more. Indiscriminate deregulation driven by cost-cutting goals alone disregards those vital public protections. I urge you to oppose this reckless deregulation push and demand greater transparency, oversight and public input on any regulatory reform efforts. Protecting the public good must take precedence over blind deregulation in pursuit of uncertain cost savings. Critical public safeguards should not be sacrificed at the altar of corporate profits without vigorous public scrutiny and democratic deliberation.
