I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to prevent any military or coercive efforts to acquire Greenland from Denmark. This dangerous pursuit threatens our most critical alliances and contradicts the values that have made America a trusted global partner for decades.
The facts are clear. Only 17% of Americans support efforts to acquire Greenland, and a mere 4% support using military force, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. This is not what your constituents want. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that U.S. seizure of Greenland would mean "the end of NATO." National security scholar Tom Nichols described this pursuit as "extraordinarily dangerous," warning it could trigger Russian attacks on Baltic states, European war, nuclear escalation, and Chinese moves on Taiwan.
Seven European nations have already launched Operation Arctic Endurance to increase military presence in Greenland in response to these threats. Our allies are preparing to defend against us. This is not strength. This is the destruction of alliances that have kept America secure since World War II.
I am encouraged by bipartisan congressional efforts to require congressional approval for any such action and prohibit federal funds for invasion of NATO members. Senator Lisa Murkowski has stated that congressional support for acquiring Greenland "is not there." Representative Don Bacon has said an attack on Greenland would constitute "a high crime and a misdemeanor" warranting impeachment.
I need you to publicly oppose any military action or forced acquisition of Greenland. Support legislation that requires congressional approval for such actions and prohibits the use of federal funds to invade NATO allies. Our security depends on our alliances, not on reckless territorial ambitions that isolate us from the democratic world.
