I am writing to express my strong opposition to any policy that would remove transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military. As a constituent of Tennessee, I believe that service members should be judged by their ability, dedication, and willingness to serve—not their gender identity. Currently, over 4,000 transgender individuals serve honorably in our armed forces, demonstrating the same bravery, discipline, and sacrifice as their peers. They have dedicated their lives to protecting our country, yet now face unjust discrimination simply because of their identity. To forcibly remove them from service not only disregards their contributions but also weakens our military by eliminating capable, committed personnel at a time when recruitment and retention are already significant challenges. Numerous studies, including research conducted by the Department of Defense and independent organizations, have found that transgender service members do not negatively impact military readiness, cohesion, or effectiveness. In fact, the military has successfully integrated diverse populations throughout history, and this should be no different. Removing these individuals sends a harmful message—that identity, rather than ability, determines a person’s worth in service to their country. I urge you to oppose any effort that seeks to purge transgender individuals from military service. Our country is strongest when we stand for equality, inclusion, and respect for those who are willing to risk everything for our freedoms. I hope you will stand on the right side of history and advocate for the rights of all service members, regardless of gender identity.
