Deceitful naming needs to stop

To: Rep. Schmoe, Sen. Kloos, Gov. Kelly

From: A verified voter in Ottawa, KS

March 21

Kansas Senator Mike Thompson's so-called Equal Rights Amendment has very little to do with securing actual equality, and more to do with trying to sneak an abortion ban into the Kansas Constitution. The language including "beginning at conception" is no accident. This current Republican supermajority has only set Kansas back farther and farther and it sickens and saddens me. Voters have already spoken on this issue. We voted in 2022 to maintain reproductive rights in Kansas. As a healthcare provider, and as someone who needed a medical abortion to complete a spontaneous abortion, I am well aware of how important these rights are, and how dangerous it is to remove access to these medical procedures. It is no surprise that instead of being truthful about what this amendment is proposing, legislators are being sneaky and underhanded to further their personal agendas. Whatever your personal feelings towards abortion, this is deceitful and wrong. Legislation should plainly state its purpose and be aptly named.
