I have always taken my kids to protests. I've marched for human rights with a baby on my back, and knocked doors with my boys in a wagon. Last year I brought my foster daughter to her first women's March and she watched my chorus sing about our power to make change for the people we care about. Last week, they heard about Renee Good on the radio and I had to explain what happened to her. My 10 year old, my sweet Mama's boy, said "mommy I don't want you to die."
On Saturday, I learned about Alex Pretti. And on Sunday, I had to lie to my kids about where I was going when I joined the anti-ICE protest in downtown Grand Rapids. I won't stay quiet, but they are just babies and I don't want them to be afraid.
Please don't make me do that again. They need to live in a country where it's safe to speak up, and where our neighbors aren't rounded up like trash and treated just as humanely. We need you to protect our rights and our neighbors.
Thank you for your service to this country
