Urge Action to Safeguard Marriage Equality Nationwide

To: Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Walberg, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

November 4

The Supreme Court's potential reconsideration of the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision through Kim Davis's appeal is deeply concerning. This case, while primarily focused on emotional-distress damages and qualified immunity, opens a dangerous door that could jeopardize marriage equality across our nation. We must take immediate action to protect this fundamental human right. The Obergefell decision in 2015 was a monumental step forward for civil rights in America, ensuring that same-sex couples could enjoy the same legal protections and recognition as heterosexual couples. However, the current appeal threatens to unravel this progress. Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff in the original case, has expressed disgust at the use of religious freedom arguments to discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals. This sentiment resonates with many who believe in equality and justice for all. While the Respect for Marriage Act provides some protections, it falls short of mandating states to issue marriage licenses if Obergefell were overturned. This loophole could lead to immediate and severe consequences in states with existing laws against same-sex marriage. The potential for such a rollback of rights is not just alarming—it's a direct threat to the lives and families of countless Americans. I urge you to take proactive steps to strengthen and codify marriage equality at the federal level. This includes supporting legislation that would enshrine the right to same-sex marriage in federal law, beyond the protections offered by the Respect for Marriage Act. Additionally, I ask that you publicly voice your support for upholding the Obergefell decision and oppose any attempts to weaken or overturn it. The Supreme Court's decision on whether to hear this case will have far-reaching implications. We cannot allow the clock to be turned back on one of the most significant human rights advancements of our lifetime. Your action now can help prevent a devastating blow to equality and ensure that all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation, continue to enjoy the right to marry whom they love.
