Protect Marriage Equality Nationwide

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Walberg

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

March 11

Protect marriage equality and oppose any effort to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges. Same-sex marriage harms no one and helps countless couples access hospital visitation rights, inheritance protections, and the ability to make medical decisions for their spouses. Hundreds of thousands of same-sex couples across America have been married for nearly a decade, building lives and contributing to their communities. Erasing their marriages accomplishes nothing except cruelty. These families deserve the same legal protections as everyone else. The religious freedom argument doesn't hold up. No church or religious individual is required to perform or recognize same-sex marriages. Marriage equality protects the civil institution of marriage, which exists separately from religious ceremony. Selective application of religious text to justify discrimination is inconsistent and inappropriate for public policy. Americans face real challenges that deserve your attention. Stand with marriage equality and focus on issues that actually improve lives.
