Take action to free the DOJ from its politicizing direction
To: Sen. Murray, Rep. Jayapal
From: A constituent in Seattle, WA
July 21
I implore Congress to use its full authority to insulate the DOJ from executive branch overreach and political interference.
The Department of Justice has strayed from its mission of upholding the law and ensuring justice for all Americans. Under AG Bondi, the DOJ has engaged in disturbing actions that undermine its integrity and independence.
Troubling examples include dropping charges against Trump's co-defendants in the classified documents case, firing prosecutors investigating Trump and the January 6th insurrection, opening retaliatory investigations into former officials like Comey and Brennan, and discrediting whistleblowers exposing unethical conduct. All are strategies that autocrats employ to strengthen their hold on power
Urgently needed concrete steps Congress could take include creating an independent prosecutor role, strengthening whistleblower protections, and increasing oversight through investigative hearings. The American people must be able to have faith that the Department of Justice works for them.
