Before we allow Trump & Co. to spend billions on buying warehouses to detain immigrants, this administration should be held responsible for the terrible job they are already doing housing detainees. There are stories of lack of food, substandard medical treatment, violence against detainees, lack of water and bathroom facilities and unexplained deaths. This comes awfully close to torture. By ICE’s own standards, detention is meant to be “non-punitive. Congress is required to provide oversight and has the power of the purse. It is past time for Congress to act.
